The Last Mile Power distribution Project

The Last Mile Project is a Government of Kenya programme   aimed at connecting households lying within 600 metres of earmarked transformers to the national grid affordably.

On August 6th 2021, OmniCorp signed a partnership agreement to work with Wayne Homes limited for Supply and Installation of 11kv and 33kv lines, associated transformers and low voltage network in lower eastern and coast region of Kenya under LOT 5. The project covered the counties of: KITUI, MAKUENI, TAITA TAVETA, KWALE, KILIFI AND TANA RIVER. All our sites were successfully commissioned and handed over within the one-year contract period.


The Contract signing of the AFDB-lastmile connection

The first Phase of the project is targeted at benefitting approximately 314,200 non-commercial customers (households) resulting in electricity access to an additional 1.5 million Kenyans. Financed by the Government of Kenya and African Development Bank (AfDB) at the cost of KShs.13.5 Billion, this phase will involve extension of the low voltage network to reach households located within 600 meters of a transformer.

In this regard, Kenya Power has identified 5,320 transformers located in all the 47 counties for the implementation of the first phase of the project with actual connectivity beggining in September 2015. To benefit from this project, potential customers will be required to contribute a total of KShs.15,000.

Last Mile Electricity Connectivity 2nd phase Signing

The proposed Last Mile Connectivity Project (LMCP) aims to optimize the use of selected Kenya Power and Lighting Company’s (KPLC) 45 000 distribution transformers located in the country’s 47 districts, through the extension of the low voltage network. It focuses on supporting the Kenyan government’s initiatives aimed at improving access to electricity for the Kenyans, especially the low income groups. The GoK (Government of Kenya) is indeed committed to increase the populations’ access to electricity from 53% in 2016 to 70% in 2017 and 100% in 2020. This support, which is part of this initiative’s Phase II, aims to connect a minimum of about 285 000 individual subscribers and 15 000 commercial subscribers located within a 600-m radius around an existing transformer. To do so, the project entails: (i) the supply of distribution equipment to connect 300,000 new subscribers; (ii) the construction of low voltage distribution lines (LV); iii) the supervision and management; and (iv) capacity building activities in targeted areas of expertise
